Korean Drama Review: Secret Garden

Secret Garden is a drama which combines romance, comedy, melodrama and fantasy.  It is produced by SBS and has a total of 20 episodes.

The story revolves around an arrogant CEO Kim Joo Won who accidentally meets a stuntwoman Gil Ra Im.  The plot gets complicated at the episodes goes farther as more casts enter the scene.  It even becomes a bit weird when the fantasy part kicks in.

Although there were a few episodes that were a unnecessary, the way the story unfolded was brilliant.  I initially thought the fantasy part would be too ridiculous but how the story was made everything seem perfectly in place.

The story also revealed the characters well.  The characters had their own identity which made the movie fun to watch.  Aside from the main characters, I also enjoyed the sub stories.  The characters also have a good chemistry between them.

In conclusion, this is a must-watch.  The plot is unique and well-balanced.  The movie was not all fun, there were a bit of tear jerking scenes too.

The New Dawn's "There's A New Dawn" has been hailed as one of the rarest and best psych albums to come out of the late 60s and early 70s. It's been a personal favorite Of mine since the day 1 discovered a bootleg copy on CD back in the early 90's .

I found the music to be just as unique and important to me as other bands I had heard from the region: The New Tweedy Brothers, The Sonics and even The Wipers.

They all conjure a distinctive geographical musical perspective. Maybe it's all the rain, but there's an almost tangible thread running through these introspective songwriters.It's a bit like looking at the world through rainy clouds while waiting for a sunny day to arrive.

In 1966, Dan Bazzy (singer , songwriter) and founder of The New Dawn bass player Bob Justin and guitarists Larry Davis and Joe Smith, local Garage Band musicians who had been straggling to find a suitable drummer. Bazzy joined their band and after a brief stint of playing as The Sound Citizens, The New Dawn was formed.

By 1967, The New Dawn were essentially a nightclub band, touring throughout the northwest part of the country, down through California and Nevada, and as far north as Alaskn. The band recorded and released their private press album "There's A New Dawn" in July of 1970.

The songs were composed in the studio and were recorded late at night after gigs. Initially five hundred copies were pressed, but it's estimated that only around 200 may still exist. Many of the records from the pressing were either damaged due to traveling or were warped, and distribution was limited since the album was sold mostly at their live shows.

Their one chance at the big time came in 1971 when the ABC-Dunhill Records label expressed a serious interest in the demo of three of their new heavier sounding songs. Considering the success ABC-Dunhill had with Steppenwolf, these demo tracks (included on this collection) demonstrate what a great fit the band could have been for the label and gives us a glimpse into what might have been for The New Dawn.

By the end of 1971, The New Dawn faded into the sunset after years of living motel to motel under the disillusionment of their missed opportunity. Over this past year I have had the privilege and pleasure of getting to know Bazzy and his family while working with him on this authorized CD release of "There's A New Dawn".

One of the highlights of this experience was the January 2008 reunion show of The New Dawn in Willamina, Oregon. Bazzy was accompanied by his son Dan (rhythm guitar), Russ Hosley (lead guitar), and Karen Purdom (bass). It still blows my mind that a garagepsych band from rural Oregon has achieved such prominence in the annals of rock history.

Movie Review: The King's Speech

When this movie first came out, I heard people saying that this movie was more on monologues and could be boring.  In fact, Kurt even refused to watch it with me that I had to watch this movie on my own.  But I really enjoyed it.

I could understand why the movie received numerous nominations and awards.  It was brilliant.  It was based on the story of King George VI, father of Queen Elizabeth II.  It was inspirational because who would ever imagine a King having a speech difficulty.  It showed that the King is also a man with obstacles to overcome.  


I could relate to the movie well.  Sometimes, I refused to believe that I had have a weak point.  But unless we accept and have the motivation to change ourselves, then we will be stuck in that pitiful state.  Often, we also tend to mistrust others.  But I'd like to believe that there are many out there who are willing to help. Although I don't stammer, I also have a difficulty in speaking and sometimes it frustrates me.  But now, I've accepted that I'm the one with the problem and I'm calmly trying to practice really hard and listen to others advise to improve it.  This may seem weird but this blog is actually one of my ways of communication.


I also can't believe that a man like King Edward VIII would give up the throne just for the woman he loves.  According to history, he stated "I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love."  But perhaps times have changed.  As indicated by the rising divorce rates, people would often settle for what is practical being already  bombarded by the hardships of life.  In fact, I know of many individuals who would rather be single than face the headaches of marriage.  What do you think? Is there still a love worth fighting for?

The Idle Race - Birthday Party (1968 uk psychedelic and psych pop with Jeff Lynne future E.L.O. band - 2007 japan remaster edition - FLAC)

The debut album by this unjustly overlooked band is a piece of classic British psychedelia that transcends its origins.

Most British bands trying to achieve a psychedelic sound in those days simply played softly and sang in a very effete and poetic manner -- the Idle Race, by contrast, play hard here and don't sound effete so much as just cheerfully trippy, a lot like the Beatles of "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever"; indeed, "End of the Road" from this album sounds like a rewrite of "Penny Lane."

Jeff Lynne is the dominant personality here, as composer, guitarist, and singer, and, as one might expect given his presence, the music all has a Beatles-like quality of playfulness amid the musical invention.

The single "Skeleton and the Roundabout" may be a little over-produced, but it is beguilingly innocent in its zaniness, and the softer middle section anticipates the structure of Lynne's later work with ELO.

Much more indicative of his future direction are "Morning Sunshine," one of the prettiest songs to come out of the entire Birmingham music scene and displaying a languid guitar flourish that anticipates any number of ELO songs circa A New World Record, and "The Lady Who Said She Could Fly," an orchestrated Beatlesque jewel that sounds like a lost ELO track.

As demonstrated here, the Idle Race weren't quite as powerful a band as their rivals the Move -- who also loved to cover American soul and folk-rock and thus had a wider variety to their sound -- but this album is steeped in beautiful melodies and even prettier embellishments in the singing and playing, yet never loses sight of its rock & roll underpinnings.

Once in a while, as in "On with the Show," the sound effects are a little more prominent than one would like, and there's a certain music hall ambience to a few songs (such as "Lucky Man") that is somewhat distracting -- but those two numbers are followed by the joyous and pounding "Pie in the Sky," so it all balances out and, overall, this album is very solid and a great deal of fun, as well as full of little surprises and signposts pointing toward Lynne's future (by Bruce Eder
).

Chic-Boy Chicken at Baboy serving meals 24-hours a day

It was little past 11 p.m. and most food places were already closed.  Luckily, we saw chic-boy still open and it was a bit crowded too.  I've heard good remarks about it so we went inside and bought for take out the Inihaw na Liempo (99 php) that we could eat as midnight snack at home.

As we opened the package, we were pleased to see two big slabs of liempo, an atachara and rice wrapped in banana leaves.  Honestly, at that price, we were expecting only one slab.  As we tasted it, it was tender, juicy and delicious.

The meal was excellent.  We would probably go back and try out their other dishes.  Its great that there is another good place to eat at 24 hours a day isn't it?
