Emitt Rhodes - The Emitt Rhodes Recordings [1969-1973] (us baroque pop rock 2CDs - MP3 320K and FLAC)

Hawthorne, CA, native Emitt Rhodes made his first mark in the music world in 1967 as the leader of the baroque pop band the Merry-Go-Round.
The band achieved some marginal success with the Rhodes-penned "Live" and "You're A Very Lovely Woman", recording one album of Magical Mystery Tour-inspired pop.

When the band broke up in 1969, Rhodes set up a home studio in his parents' garage and began his solo career, engineering and playing all instruments himself.

The strength of his initial demos, now showing a strong Paul McCartney influence, helped him get signed to ABC/Dunhill.
His critically acclaimed, self-titled debut managed to break into the Top 40 in 1971, but pressure from his record company forced him to rush-release a follow-up, Mirror, the same year.

Mirror was predictably a lesser effort, barely charting.
By the time of the third album, 1973's Farewell to Paradise, Rhodes was running into legal problems with ABC, since he was unable to fulfill his contract, which demanded he deliver a new album every six months.

Disillusioned, he retired from the performing side of the business, working instead as an engineer and studio operator for Elektra/Asylum.

Though he never released an album since Farewell to Paradise, he continued to write and demo new songs. (by Chris Woodstra)

The Mourning Dayze - The Lost Recordings (67 us psychedelic pop - MP3 320k and FLAC)

The Mourning Dayze were a Wisconsin garage band in the mid-'60s heavily influenced by the Beatles and the Byrds and this extremely brief (22 minutes) collection of the group's recordings from 1967 shows just how derivative they actually were.

"Man with the Thin Mind", which is probably the best track here, bubbles along on a speeded up "Taxman" (via the Beatles) progression while "The Mourning Dayze" is clearly the Byrds' "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" with a different set of lyrics.

Likewise "Moon That Gives No Sunlight" takes its melody and even the tone and feel of its lyrics from Bob Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom", and the arrangement is exactly the same as the Byrds' version of the Dylan song.
All of this is a bit bothersome, but the Mourning Dayze weren't doing anything that a thousand other local bands weren't also doing at the time, and copping from the Beatles, the Byrds, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Animals and the Yardbirds is what gives the whole garage band phenomenon of the '60s its signature feel and sound.

Still, nothing here generates more than historical interest, and even the much lauded "Fly My Paper Airplane" (included here in two versions), which has been cited as a lost psychedelic classic, hardly lives up to its billing.

Bands like this one were extremely valuable in their local communities, places where megastars like the Beatles weren't likely to visit, but translated to a larger stage, well, the world already had the Beatles and the Byrds, and while imitation is flattery, it's still imitation, however nicely configured it might be. David Clayton-Thomas - David Clayton-Thomas (69, uk blues, soul and pop rock - Flac)

This 1969 album was issued soon after the singer had made his recording debut with Blood, Sweat & Tears, taking both himself and the band to superstardom.

Clayton-Thomas has said that this LP was a cash-in, compiled by a producer who located unreleased pre-Blood, Sweat & Tears tapes that Thomas made in Canada, and then dubbed them with horns to make them sound more like Blood, Sweat & Tears.
The result isn't entirely disreputable, but in the manner of such records, there's a curious exploitative feel about the product, right down to its basic artwork and total lack of liner notes and musician credits.

It consists almost entirely of blues, R&B, and soul covers on the order of "I Got a Woman", "Stormy Monday", "Tobacco Road", "Boom Boom," and "Poison Ivy" (Clayton-Thomas is awarded the writing credits for a couple of tunes that are in fact covers of Howlin' Wolf's "Who's Been Talkin'" and Elmore James' "Done Somebody Wrong").

It's not too imaginative, as the set is basically that of a blues-soul-oriented mid-'60s cover band.

But Clayton-Thomas does sing the material reasonably well, the backing combo grooving along in a slightly jazzy soul-rock mode, with organ and occasional raw garage rock guitar.

The overdubbed horns do sound awkward, though, as if they're indeed trying to shove the tracks in a more Blood, Sweat & Tears direction.

If this was going to have been released at all, it would have been better to leave the original tapes unaltered. (by Richie Unterberger from amg)

01.I Got A Woman

David Clayton-Thomas - David Clayton-Thomas (72, uk blues, soul and pop rock - Flac)

Surrey-born David Thomsett moved with his Canadian-born father & musical English mum back to the suburbs of Toronto when he was just a 6 year-old child.

Hot-blooded and driven, he left home at 14, waded through reformatories, farm jobs and bar bands until he finally hit pay dirt with Blood Sweat & Tears in 1968.
By the time he was 30 (and with his name changed), Clayton-Thomas was ready to release his 1972 debut solo LP - and having fronted the mighty Blood, Sweat & Tears as it's funky and fantastic vocalist - it was simply more of the same.

(...) Co-produced by B, S & T buddies Bobby Colomby and Joel Sill, it was released in April 1972 on CBS S 64755 in the UK and Columbia KC 31000 in the USA. (...)

Highlights are Edgar Winter's post-Woodstock anti-war anthem "Dying To Live" which is given a powerful rendition with strings that strengthen the melody and message rather than drown it (lyrics above).

The "After The Gold Rush" classic of "Don't Let It Bring You Down" by Neil Young is also treated to a strange solitary French Horn opening that really works - it takes a good song and moves it to somewhere different - very cool.

But the real peach here is his gorgeous vocal to Gram Parson's much-covered "She".
Clayton-Thomas does it more than justice - he almost makes it his own.
His lone "daddy was a junkie..." song about his favourite haunt "North Beach Racetrack" is a funky-as-f**k guitar romp where he roars a B, S & T mannerism "...tell the truth boy!" It's excellent and features slick guitar work from all three, Paul Cannon, Steve Cropper and Thomas himself.

The sound is superb throughout, punchy and vibrant.
There is hiss on some of the quieter songs like "Once Burned", but it's not too much to detract.

A niggle would be that the writers for "Dying To Live" and "Sing A Song" are wrongly credited in the booklet (their corrected above), but apart from that - this is a great reissue of a criminally forgotten Seventies gem.

Clayton-Thomas went on to make two more albums during the period - "Tequila Sunrise" in 1973 and "Harmony Junction" in 1974.
They're available elsewhere.

I've always had a soft spot for Blood, Sweat & Tears and anything that sounds like them.
Check out the funky and righteous cover of Paul Kelly's "Stealin' In The Name Of The Lord" (it was a minor hit in 1970 on Happy Tiger Records) or the gorgeous cover of "She" - you'll be hooked. (by Mark Barry from Reckless Records Store, London)

The Association - Just The Right Sound Antology (1965-1972+1981 us folk and pop rock - compilation with 2 CDs and 51 tracks - MP3 320K and FLAC)

The Association turned the pop world on its ear with spine-tingling harmonies, a big California folk-pop sound, and top-notch original material.

Founded in 1965 by Russ Giguere, Jules Gary Alexander, Ted Bluechel, Terry Kirkman, Jim Yester, and Brian Cole, the band broke into the national spotlight in 1966 with “Along Comes Mary” and “Cherish.”

The follow-up album was a hit later that year, prompting Warner Bros. to sign them and release their third album, 1967’s Insight Out, which featured another #1 hit in “Windy.”

Just The Right Sound: The Association Anthology is the definitive collection of hits, album tracks, and rarities.

It features 51 tracks (33 on CD for the first time!) on two CDs, including the previously unreleased “The Machine” and “Better Times,” plus hard-to-find single mixes of their greatest hits. Booklet includes liner notes, rare photos, and track notes from the band members (Rhino).

Van Dyke Parks - Jump! (1984 us pop orchestration mixed banjos, mandolins & baroque strings - MP3 320K and FLAC)

Written as the score of a never-produced musical, Jump! must be the best score in the history of Broadway rejects.

A gifted melodist and arranger, Parks digs deep into his Southern roots and pulls out this Brer Rabbit of a bouncy, melancholy masterpiece.

Not for those who like their pop predictable, ironic or cynical, I predict that Jump! will be Van Dyke Parks greatest legacy, the truest reflection of his extraordinary grasp of the heart of American music.

Arranger-to-the-stars Van Dyke Parks tends to divide listeners down the middle, with some loving his self-consciously literate, allusive pop compositions, and others failing to appreciate his idiosyncractic genius.

I have been intrigued by Parks ever since hearing his legendary late 60's pop masterpiece, Song Cycle.

With exceptions of Jump! and Song Cycle, Parks' solo work has been uneven, with flashes of brilliance appearing in the midst of heartfelt but rather unoriginal covers of calypso hits.

I generally applaud his hard to describe blend of clever wordplay, pop/rock tunesmithing, and classical Americana. Parks' own musical idol is Louis Moreau Gottschalk, the early 19th century American composer championed by Liszt and Chopin, who took the world's concert halls by storm with a blend of European classical technique, minstrelsy and Creole dance forms---a full century before Gerswhin and Ellington were hailed for accomplishing similar fusions.

If Gottschalk was an underappreciated genius, as many believe, Parks is his worthy, 20th century, pop-savvy heir.

In addition to Jump! and Song Cycle, I can recommend the Parks compiliation Idiosyncratic Path, and his recent live album, Moonlighting.

Also check out his stunning orchestral interludes on Sam Phillips gorgeous art-rock meets-the-Byrds-and-Beatles album, Wow (by Craiglink).

The Good Rats - From Rats To Riches (1978 us mix of hard rock, pop and rock'n'roll - MP3 320K and FLAC)

For fans of The Greatest Band That Was Never Known, Tasty & From Rats to Riches were arguably their best.

By 1978 the five man combo of Peppi Marchello-Vocals & Harmonica, Mickey Marchello-Guitar & Vocals, John (The Cat) Gatto-Lead Guitar, Lenny Kotke-Bass & Vocals and Joe Franco-Drums had coalesced into a solid unit mixing balls-out Rock & Roll with barbershop harmonies and turning that into great music that (dammit) should have translated into national fame.

At their height in the late '70s and early 80s The Good Rats had performed at Madison Square Garden, the Philadelphia Spectrum, the Nassau Coliseum, the Hammersmith Odeon in England, the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ (a late great venue) and New York's Central Park.

The Good Rats had also played most of the major showcase rooms in the country including the Bottom Line (RIP), Paradise in Boston, Whisky in L.A., well... you get the point!

They headlined and opened up for such groups as Twisted Sister, Rush, Aerosmith, Meatloaf, Ozzy, Grateful Dead, Kiss, Journey, Heart, Springsteen, Styx and many others.

With Tasty (1978) and From Rats To Riches (1978) the band was at the top of their form. Ranging from power ballads (Songwriter, Let Me) to witty ditties (Fred Upstairs and Ginger Snappers, Coo Coo Coo Blues) to Heavy Rock Injun Joe, Takin' it to Detroit) The Good Rats with their carefully blended harmonies, great (IMHO) writing and stellar musicianship had everything they needed to put themselves among the greats of their day.

Dammit, they should have made it, but despite being Picked up by a minor Capitol label and picking up Flo & Eddie for producers, they never made it to the charts, much less got airplay.

Still, their albums hold up to this day, and give me a charge every time I put them on (by Bogframe from audiokarma.org).

The David Clark Five - The Complete History (1964-1968 uk beat and pop rock - boxset with 7 CDs - MP3 320K and FLAC)

For a very brief time in 1964, it seemed that the biggest challenger to the Beatles' phenomenon was the Dave Clark Five.

From the Tottenham area of London, the quintet had the fortune to knock "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the British charts with "Glad All Over," and were championed (for about 15 minutes) by the British press as the Beatles' most serious threat.

They were the first British Invasion band to break in a big way in the States after the Beatles, though the Rolling Stones and others quickly supplanted the DC5 as the Fab Four's most serious rivals.

The Dave Clark Five reached the Top 40 17 times between 1964 and 1967 with memorable hits like "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces," "Because," and a remake of Bobby Day's "Over and Over," as well as making more appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show than any other English act.

The DC5 were distinguished from their British contemporaries by their larger-than-life production, Clark's loud stomping drum sound, and Mike Smith's leathery vocals.

Though accused by detractors of lacking finesse and hipness, they had a solid ear for melodies and harmonies and wrote much of their early material, the best of which endured quite well.

Interestingly, and unusually for that era, bandleader Dave Clark managed and produced the band himself, negotiating a much higher royalty rate than artists of that period usually received.

After a couple years of superstardom, the group proved unable to either keep up with the changing times or maintain a high standard of original compositions, and called it quits in 1970 (by Richie Unterberger).

The Human Beinz & The Mammals - The Human Beinz & The Mammals (1967 us/uk garage beat pop, blue eyed soul - MP3 320k and FLAC)

Best-known for its version of "Nobody but Me," Youngstown, OH's frat rock quartet the Human Beinz featured rhythm guitarist Ting Markulin, lead guitarist Richard Belley, bassist Mel Pachuta, and drummer Mike Tatman. Originally known as the Human Beings, the group was a local favorite and was discovered playing at a Youngstown bar. Their early releases include covers of Bob Dylan's "Times They Are A-Changin'" and Them's "Gloria," as well as renditions of the Who and Yardbirds songs; they released their first singles on the local Gateway imprint.

In 1967, the group signed to Capitol Records and scored a Top Ten hit with their cover of the Isley Brothers' "Nobody but Me." On their debut album, which was also named Nobody but Me, the band found their name changed to the Human Beinz, a play on the hippie phrase "be-in." The following year, the group issued Evolutions, which showcased a more original side to the Human Beinz' music, but the album did little and the band ultimately broke up. ~ Heather Phares

This is split release featuring songs recorded for Gateway prior to the enormous success of their Capitol Records release 'Nobody But Me', but not released until 1967. Since Gateway didn't have enough material for a full album, they included cuts from a similar band, The Mammals. Contains Human Beinz doing covers of pop hits from the day like 'Pied Piper', 'My Generation' and 'Gloria'.
