Denny King - Evil Wind Is Blowing (1972 us, acid blues rock, Captain Beefheart's sideman, 2010 edition - MP3 320k and FLAC)

Born Dennis Gordon Ottenbacher in Wisconsin in 1942, singer / guitarist Denny King started out on the Milwaukee local music scene in the early 60s. By the early 70s he was based in the small town of Lancaster I (in California's Mojave desert) at the time his sole album was made.



A bluesman, he quickly became a lynchpin of the local scene, playing with numerous local musicians. Two of those were Alex St. Claire (guitar, trumpet) and Doug Moon (harmonica), who had played in the early incarnation of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, and accompanied King on his sole LR which appeared on Little Richard's Specialty label (as SPS 5003) in the summer of 1972. A good-humored set of odd electric blues, St Claire produced it, and also takes a co-writing credit on Desert Sand, making it a considerable curio for Beefheart completists.



Famed critic Barry Hansen (better known as Dr. Demento) wrote the enthusiastic sleevenotes, HR which promise that "you'll soon know why they call that place the high desert!", but sales were predictably small, and the extracted 45 (Bessie Mae / Go Down Moses) was also a slow seller. King later set up a booking agency, with the aim of helping bands getting a start playing in bars, and later specialised in opening music venues in Asia, and organizing entertainment for US forces in Korea.



By all accounts a humble and religious man, King died in April 2000. At that time he had been playing in a band called The Watchmen, with members of his church.

Aerosmith - Aerosmith ( 1973 great us hard rock blended hard blues - Wave audio format)

I love this album. It still twiddles all the right bits in my brain twenty years on from my purchase and nearly thirty years on from it's inception! I've seen some fairly scathing reviews of some of these album tracks and cannot understand why. The comparisons to the Stones are unfair, and betray laziness. Yes, Tyler's mouth bears a passing resemblance in size to Jagger's, and he was a fan of the Stones but he was also a big fan of James Brown, whose funky, blues influence is, if anything, felt more than anyone else's on this album. Certainly the lyrics were more amusing and more inventive than the Stones'ever were, laced with crazy American slang and drenched with a sleaze that can only be described as funny. Well, what else would you expect from a good time, rhythm and blues rock band? Aerosmith deliver this and more. My personal favourites have, and always will, include Somebody, Write Me A Letter and One Way Street. The vocals on this latter track are quite simply fabulous, with Tyler at his most feline. This is formative listening for all rockers... put it on and boogie 'round the bedroom before you leave the house... you'll feel better for it.(By Corduroy Angel)

An extra long holiday due to dengue fever

Last Wednesday, my mom overworked herself a bit and the next day she got a fever.  She was still continuing her daily routine.  Just this Tuesday, we all got surprised that her nose bled and my little sister advised that she be brought for a blood test.  The tests revealed that her platelets dropped to 30,000 when the normal was 400,000.  We immediately search for a doctor.  It was difficult find one since it was a holiday.

As a last resort, we called and consulted from Healthway and their medtech advised us to rush my mom to an Emergency Room (E.R.).  She was admitted instantly at Medical Center Manila Hospital.  She was positive for Dengue Fever.  In order to increase her platelets she had 3 bags of plasma transfused.  According to my sister, low platelets means you can have internal bleeding anytime.

Blood samples were taken from her every six hours to monitor her platelets.  Some blood samples were easily taken and some were not.  I hope she can recover soon.  Here is her results so far:

Wednesday 6 a.m. - 20,000

The doctor said my mom's slow recovery was due to her diarrhea from the "tawa-tawa" extract.  He advised her to only drink water from then on.  Hopefully, she'll recover faster.  I guess its better to trust the doctor than hearsays and myths.=p

It's my first time to stay overnight with my mom at a hospital.  It felt like an ordinary hotel.  Price is almost the same too.   But I missed home instantly.  I missed my pillows, blanket and WiFi.=p  Lucky for me, I have 4 other siblings so we had shifts.  I can't imagine how homesick my mom is though.

On the bright side, at least my mom finally had the chance to finish Smallville season 6.  Relatives visited the hospital everyday and everyone had a chance to catch up.   Thanks to all the friends and relatives who have showed their care and prayed for my mom's recovery.

Our Failed Attempt on Sagada Mountain Tea

We bought and brought home Sagada Mountain Tea leaves so that my mom and my sibling could taste them.  My little sister boiled them and it the color looked the same as the one we had in Sagada.  Upon tasting it tasted weird like sap.  We couldn't drink it.=(

So we asked our other friends who bought the leaves too.  They told us that we overcooked our tea leaves.  It was only supposed to be placed for 10 minutes once the water is already boiled.  Do you agree?  What's your method in making tea from actual leaves?

Sleepy Hollow - Sleepy Hollow (72, us beatlesque/badfinger style, well-orchestrated pop and rock, vinyl rip - FLAC)

Slapping an album with a Beatles comparison is usually the equivalent of an artistic and commercial kiss of death.

Luckily, this was one of those rare cases where the comparison actually had some basis.



Recorded at Philadelphia International's Philly-based Sigma Studios, 1972's "Sleepy Hollow" was co-produced by John Madara and the late Tom Sellers (of Assembled Multitude fame).

The limited liner notes indicated Sleepy Hollow was a trio featuring the talents of singer/guitarist Richard Billay, bass player Richie Bremen and drummer Joe Zucca.

With Billay responsible for all nine tracks, material like 'One Time' and 'Lay It On the Line' did have a late-inning Beatles flavor, though to my ears a better overall comparison would be Badfinger ('Take Me Back'), Emmit Rhodes ('Love Minus You'), or perhaps even a mid-1970s Lennon solo album ('Lady').

The trio's sound wasn't particularly original, but Billay had an impressive chameleon-like voice that managed to recall both Lennon's tougher sound ('Sincerely Yours' would not have been out of place on "Walls and Bridges") and McCartney's more pop-oriented material ('One Time' complete with great backing vocals).

Artistically this may not have been a major statement, but made for one fun album and was simply miles ahead of most of the Beatlesque competition.



- An engaging mid-tempo rocker, "Sincerely Yours" sported an early solo John Lennon sound.

Say what you will about the album's lack of originality, but on this one Billay nailed Lennon right down to his take-no-prisoners snarling delivery.



- The up-tempo "One Time" sounded like something pulled off an early Badfinger album.

Extremely commercial and radio ready, if would have made a nice single.



- Another radio friendly effort, the ballad "Take Me Back" sounded like Badfinger channeling Paul McCartney.

Billay even managed to mimic the Badfinger harmony vocals and Pete Ham's instantly recognizable slide guitar sound.



- Kicked along by a nice slide guitar, "Talking Out Of Turn" was a straightforward rocker that momentarily managed to breakaway from the Beatles/Badfinger influences.

One of my favorite performances.



- Another pretty ballad, "Lay It On The Line" showcased Billay's best McCartney impression.

If you like McCartney, you'll like this one.

If you think he's shallow and saccharine, then stay away.



- "Love Minus You" started out side two with an Emmit Rhodes-does-McCartney pop number.

The results were extremely catchy, but likely to put some folks into a diabetic coma.

Bremen turned in some great bass work on this one.



- The first real disappointment, "Lady" was a pretty, but instantly forgettable ballad.

Imagine something lifted off of an early Eric Carmen solo album ...



- Complete with punchy horns the rocker "Roller Coaster Man" sounded like an early Raspberries track with a Beach Boys segment thrown in the middle.

Those comparisons where meant as compliments.



- "Hades" ended the album with another Lennon-esque ballad.

Heavily orchestrated (courtesy of Tom Sellers), this one was apparently meant to be the album's big statement.

Complete with stark piano, echo treated vocals (which served to underscore the comparison to Lennon's voice), Christmas bells and a big backing chorus, the results were a little over-the-top for me, but so what ...



Elsewhere Family pulled a single from the album:

- 1972's "Hades" b/w "Sincerely Yours" (Family catalog number 0916).



All told one of the better Beatlesque releases I've heard.
